Carpet Cleaning on Long Island: What to Expect

Elite Carpet Cleaning Pros — New York & Massachusetts

Long Island homes take a beating. Salt air from the coast, sandy soil tracked in from the beach, humidity in the summer, and the kind of foot traffic that comes with larger households — carpets here tend to need more attention than the national average. Here is what you should know before booking.

Hot Water Extraction Is the Standard

Most Long Island carpet cleaners use hot water extraction, also called steam cleaning. The machine injects hot water and a cleaning solution deep into the fibers, then immediately extracts it along with the loosened soil, allergens, and bacteria. It is the method recommended by every major carpet manufacturer and by the IICRC (the carpet cleaning industry's certification body).

Some services advertise dry cleaning or low-moisture methods. These are faster and leave carpets dry sooner, but they do not clean as deeply. For most residential jobs — especially homes with pets or kids — hot water extraction is the right choice.

What Affects the Price on Long Island

Most companies price by room or by square foot. Per-room pricing is typically $40 to $75 per room, though larger rooms or heavily soiled carpet costs more. Per-square-foot pricing runs $0.25 to $0.50 for standard cleaning. Stairs are usually priced separately at $3 to $5 per step.

Watch out for bait-and-switch pricing. Some companies advertise very low room prices and then add charges for pre-treatment, deodorizer, furniture moving, and high-traffic areas once they arrive. Ask upfront what is included and whether there are additional fees before anyone starts cleaning.

Pet Odor on Long Island

Long Island homes tend to have dogs. Pet urine odor is the number-one complaint we hear from customers who had their carpets cleaned elsewhere and were not happy with the results. The reason is that urine soaks through the carpet into the padding and sometimes into the subfloor. Surface cleaning does not remove it — it just masks it temporarily.

Effective pet odor treatment requires enzyme-based deodorizer applied before extraction, UV light inspection to find deposits that are invisible to the naked eye, and in severe cases, treatment of the carpet backing and padding separately. We do all of this as part of our standard pet odor treatment.
