How Long Does Carpet Cleaning Take?
One of the most common questions we get before a booking is: "How long is this actually going to take?" It's a fair question, you want to plan your day. The honest answer depends on a few things, and we'll break all of them down here.
The Short Answer. Time by Room Count
| Rooms | Estimated Time (Steam Cleaning) |
|---|---|
| 1 room (bedroom or living room) | 20–30 minutes |
| 2 rooms | 30–50 minutes |
| 3 rooms | 45–70 minutes |
| 4–5 rooms | 1.5–2.5 hours |
| Whole house (6+ rooms) | 2.5–4 hours |
These are estimates for standard steam cleaning with no major stain issues. Add time for heavy soiling, pet stains, or if your furniture needs to be moved.
What Affects Cleaning Time
1. Cleaning Method
Steam cleaning (hot water extraction) is the most thorough method, and the one we use most. It takes longer than dry cleaning or bonnet cleaning, but it pulls more out of the carpet. Dry cleaning methods are faster but leave more residue behind. If speed is your priority over depth, that's worth knowing upfront.
2. Soil Level
Light maintenance cleaning moves faster. A carpet that hasn't been professionally cleaned in 3+ years, has pet traffic, or has visible staining takes longer, we pre-treat, agitate, and may need multiple passes to fully extract.
3. Furniture
If you've cleared the room ahead of time, we move right into cleaning. If we need to work around or move furniture, add 15–30 minutes depending on how much there is. We always put furniture back where we found it.
4. Stain Treatment
Pet urine, red wine, and old set-in stains require pre-treatment and dwell time before extraction. Multiple stain spots across a room can add 20–30 minutes to the job. We'll flag this during your free estimate so there are no surprises on the day.
5. Square Footage of Each Room
A small bedroom cleans in 20 minutes. A large open-plan living room might take 45. We price and time by room, but room size matters. Stairs also add time, we count each staircase as an additional unit.
How Long Does Carpet Take to Dry?
After steam cleaning, carpets typically feel damp to slightly wet. Drying time depends on:
- Ventilation, open windows and fans speed drying significantly
- Humidity, dry days dry faster; humid summer days take longer
- Carpet thickness, thicker pile holds more moisture
- Soil level cleaned, heavier extractions leave more residual moisture
In most cases: 4–8 hours to fully dry. Some lighter cleanings are ready in 2–3 hours. You can walk on the carpet immediately in socks, just avoid heavy foot traffic and replacing furniture until fully dry.
Can You Be Home the Whole Time?
Yes, and we recommend it, especially for the start so we can walk through the space together. You don't need to hover. Most customers step into another room while we work. If you need to step out during the job, that's fine too, we'll lock up when done if you've made arrangements.
What to Do Before We Arrive
- Vacuum the carpets beforehand if possible (removes loose surface debris)
- Clear small items from the floor (toys, shoes, clutter)
- Move breakables off furniture if you want us to shift it
- Make sure we have clear access to a water source and power outlet
"They showed up on time, finished our 3-bedroom in under 2 hours, and the carpets were dry by evening. The whole thing was seamless."
